Kadondi Gracious has officially been sworn in as the 92nd Guild President of Makerere University, marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter at one of Africa’s most influential academic institutions.
The ceremony, presided over by Yusuf Kiranda on behalf of Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe, also saw the swearing-in of the new guild cabinet and members of the Guild Representative Council.
The inauguration followed a formal handover from outgoing Guild President Ssentamu Churchill James, signaling both continuity in leadership and a renewed focus on student priorities.
In his message, Ssentamu expressed confidence in the incoming leadership, emphasizing the importance of integrity and resilience in guiding the student body.
“I have every confidence that the student body is in capable and steady hands… I wish you wisdom in decision-making, strength in moments of challenge, and remarkable success throughout your tenure.”

In her first remarks after taking the oath, Kadondi outlined a clear agenda centered on academic justice and student welfare, themes that defined her campaign.
“The oath is taken, and the work begins. Today, I officially swore in as your 92nd Guild President. This journey isn’t just about a title; it’s about the academic justice we campaigned for from reviewing tuition policies to ensuring recovery papers for our finalists.”
Her statement reflects growing concerns among students around affordability, academic support systems, and fairness in university processes issues that have increasingly shaped campus leadership debates.

Alongside the president, the swearing-in of the guild cabinet and Guild Representative Council marks the formation of a new leadership structure tasked with representing student interests across Makerere’s colleges.
The team is expected to play a central role in policy engagement, student advocacy, and coordination between the administration and the student body.
Makerere University’s guild leadership has long been viewed as a training ground for national leadership, often reflecting broader social and political dynamics in Uganda.
Kadondi’s rise to the position signals not only a generational shift but also increasing expectations for student leaders to deliver tangible outcomes in areas such as academic policy, welfare, and institutional accountability.
As Kadondi Gracious begins her tenure, attention will be on how quickly campaign promises translate into action. Her leadership comes at a time when students are demanding more responsive governance and practical solutions to academic challenges.
The coming months will be critical in shaping both her legacy and the evolving role of student leadership at Makerere University.
