A serious road traffic accident involving a police “drone” vehicle in Ggaba Trading Centre has left a journalist critically injured, raising fresh concerns about operational safety during high-risk suspect transfers.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. on April 15, 2026, when a Toyota Hiace, registration number UU 00067 T, reportedly suffered brake failure while transporting a suspect to a mobile court session.

According to Uganda Police Force, the vehicle lost control near the mobile court premises between Maranatha Primary School and Maranatha High School, knocking down Mulwana Ronald, a 28-year-old journalist attached to PL Online TV.

Mulwana was rushed to Mulago Hospital in critical condition, where he was placed on oxygen before being transferred to Ruby Hospital for further management. Authorities confirmed that he remains alive but in critical condition.

Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that the driver has since been taken in to record a statement, while the vehicle has been impounded as investigations into the crash continue.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle was transporting Christopher Okello Onyum, a suspect facing charges over the alleged machete killing of four toddlers at a daycare earlier this month.

The suspect was enroute to a mobile court hearing, a process commonly used to expedite judicial proceedings in high-profile or sensitive cases.

Despite the disruption caused by the crash, the open-air court session proceeded, with witnesses giving testimony before the hearing was later adjourned to April 16 after the suspect reported feeling unwell.

The continuation of proceedings amid the incident has sparked debate about safety protocols during mobile court operations, particularly in busy urban areas.

The incident has drawn attention to the condition and safety standards of police transport vehicles, especially those used in high-pressure operations involving suspects and public spaces.

As investigations continue, questions are likely to focus on vehicle maintenance, emergency preparedness, and the broader safety framework surrounding mobile court operations in Kampala.

Authorities are expected to release further findings as investigations progress, while the condition of the injured journalist remains a key concern.
