NUP’s Kadondi Secures Top Student Leadership Role
On Thursday, April 9, 2026, Makerere University students elected Gracious Kadondi, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), as the 92nd Guild President of Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious university. Kadondi defeated former Miss Uganda 2023/24, Hannah Karema Tumukunde, in a closely contested race that attracted significant attention both on campus and nationally.
Kadondi, who previously served as Vice President in the 91st Guild Government under President Churchill James Ssentamu, brings extensive experience in student leadership to her new role. Her campaign, anchored on the bold slogan “No Cuddling,” emphasized assertive advocacy for student rights, refusing to compromise on key issues. Supporters praised her commitment to championing the welfare of fellow students, drawing on her prior experience within the guild.
Background and Path to Victory
Kadondi secured the NUP ticket after winning the party’s internal primaries in March 2026 at Makerere’s Kavule grounds. She defeated four other contenders, polling 580 votes compared to her closest rival’s 286. This victory positioned her as NUP’s flagbearer in a field that initially included 13 candidates but quickly narrowed into a two-way contest between Kadondi and Hannah Karema, an independent candidate with broad appeal.
The election was not without controversy. Physical campaigns were temporarily banned, and a chaotic presidential debate had to be halted due to clashes between supporters of the two leading candidates. Despite these challenges, voting proceeded, including reportedly online components, and Kadondi emerged victorious. Official results were declared by Guild Electoral Commission Chairperson, Maureen Owomugisha.

Campaign Focus and Key Issues
Kadondi’s manifesto focused on pressing student concerns at Makerere University. Key priorities included: reforming tuition policies to alleviate financial burdens, improving student welfare such as housing and health services, advocating for inclusive governance, and defending the independence of the Students’ Guild while pushing back against perceived restrictions on activism.
Her tenure as outgoing Vice President gave her an edge in demonstrating continuity while promising bolder action. The win also continues the trend of NUP-aligned leadership in recent guild administrations, reflecting the party’s strong influence among Makerere students.

Significance of the Election
The Guild Presidency at Makerere University is among the most influential student leadership positions in Uganda. Many past guild presidents have transitioned into national politics, securing parliamentary seats or other high offices. Kadondi’s election as a young female leader in a competitive race highlights the growing role of women in Ugandan student and potentially national politics.
Her victory underscores the enduring influence of NUP structures and “People Power” sentiment on campus, even in the face of strong independent challengers like Karema, who was praised for her cross-campus visibility and appeal. Congratulations poured in from students and observers alike, hailing the win as a triumph of experienced, student-centered leadership.
As she prepares to assume office, expectations are high for Kadondi to deliver on promises of reform and fearless advocacy. Makerere University, known for its vibrant student politics, now looks to the 92nd Guild under Gracious Kadondi to navigate ongoing challenges related to fees, student welfare, and academic freedoms.
