For Ugandan citizens planning to travel to South Africa, it is important to understand that a visa is required for tourism, business visits, or family visits of up to 90 days. Uganda is not currently on the visa free or visa on arrival list for ordinary passport holders as of February 2026.
The application process is handled by the South African Department of Home Affairs and submitted through VFS Global at the Visa Application Centre in Kampala, located in the Lugogo Forest Mall area. While an eVisa system exists for some countries, Ugandan applicants generally still apply in person through VFS.
Contrary to common belief, the process is not overly complicated if you prepare the required documents properly. Immigration authorities mainly focus on whether you have strong ties to Uganda, which demonstrates that you intend to return after your visit.
