Security Forces Defend Deployment at Bobi Wine’s Home as Preventive Measure

Uganda Police have defended the continued security deployment at the home of former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, insisting the move is purely preventive and aimed at safeguarding national security.

Addressing journalists at the Naguru Police Headquarters, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke clarified that Kyagulanyi is not under arrest and is not facing any criminal charges. He emphasized that the security presence in Magere should not be misinterpreted, noting that law enforcement agencies retain the responsibility to act in anticipation of threats to public order.

Rusoke stressed that police would only intervene if Kyagulanyi or any other individual commits an offence, at which point due legal processes would be followed.

Police also dismissed claims of a post-election curfew or widespread repression, explaining that ongoing arrests stem from intelligence-led operations and routine security checks meant to prevent violence following the 2026 general elections.

Regarding the reported arrests of National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders and supporters, Rusoke said police were still compiling reports from the Criminal Investigations Directorate, urging patience as investigations continue.

“There is no curfew anywhere in the country,” Rusoke said, adding that spot checks are lawful measures designed to protect lives and property during sensitive post-election periods.
