Driver indiscipline worsens congestion despite swift police response
Heavy traffic disrupted movement along the Kampala–Masaka Highway on Thursday after a multi-vehicle crash at Buwama. The accident occurred near Jalia City and involved four vehicles, causing a significant buildup of congestion that stretched across the busy route.
According to reports from the scene, the crash involved a Fuso truck, a trailer, a Sinotruck carrying sand, and a Fuso box body. The impact blocked part of the highway and slowed traffic movement in both directions as drivers struggled to navigate around the wreckage.
Police Respond Quickly to Clear the Scene
Officers from Uganda Police Force arrived shortly after the incident and worked to remove the damaged vehicles from the road. Their efforts helped reopen the affected section and allowed traffic to begin moving again.
Despite the quick response, normal flow did not resume immediately. Vehicles moved slowly as congestion remained heavy, with long queues forming on both sides of the highway.
Authorities confirmed that the road was eventually cleared, but delays continued beyond the initial disruption caused by the crash.
Driver Behavior Prolongs Traffic Gridlock
Officials pointed to driver indiscipline as a major factor behind the extended congestion. Many motorists ignored lane rules and created unauthorized lanes in an attempt to bypass the jam. This led to confusion, blocked sections of the road, and made it harder for traffic officers to manage the situation.
The lack of coordination among drivers slowed the recovery process even after the wreckage had been removed. Instead of easing the situation, the behavior intensified the gridlock and delayed the return to normal traffic conditions.

As of the latest update, traffic along the Kampala–Masaka Highway has fully resumed. The situation improved once drivers began following instructions from officers and returned to proper lane discipline.
The incident caused hours of delay for commuters, transport operators, and businesses that rely on the route. The highway remains one of the busiest in the country, connecting Kampala to the western and southwestern regions, making any disruption highly impactful.
Authorities Call for Discipline on the Road
Police have urged motorists to remain patient during such incidents and to follow traffic guidelines at all times. They emphasized that cooperation from drivers plays a key role in managing emergencies and restoring movement quickly.
Officials stressed that while accidents can cause unavoidable disruption, responsible driving can prevent situations from escalating. Staying within designated lanes and obeying instructions can reduce delays and improve safety for everyone on the road.
