Gen Salim Saleh Blasts Musicians Over Constant Money Requests at His Gulu Home

In a strongly worded message that has stirred debate within Uganda’s entertainment industry, Gen. Salim Saleh has publicly expressed frustration with musicians who frequently seek financial assistance from him at his residence in Gulu. Saleh, the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation and brother to President Yoweri Museveni, said the repeated visits are consuming time he needs for national duties.

Speaking at a recent public event, the General said he was overwhelmed by constant meetings with artists requesting support, noting that the situation has even interfered with his ability to meet members of the National Resistance Movement. He cited examples of meeting musicians such as Buchaman and Raga Dee throughout the day, leaving little room for other responsibilities.

Saleh warned that he has done as much as he can to help and suggested that artists should focus on protecting and developing what they already have instead of relying on handouts. He also challenged critics who might respond negatively on social media, saying he is prepared for any backlash.

The issue is not new. In 2024, Saleh wrote an open letter to Presidential Advisor on Creatives Eddy Kenzo and Cindy Sanyu, president of the Uganda Musicians Association, asking them to address the growing number of musicians traveling to Gulu to seek financial help, which he said was affecting his work in Northern Uganda.

Reports indicate the visits increased after the 2021 elections, with some artists claiming they had supported the ruling party and were therefore seeking assistance. Others reportedly combine trips for performances with personal visits to Saleh in hopes of additional support.

Public reactions remain divided. Some sympathize with musicians facing financial hardship, while others support Saleh’s stance, saying it was necessary to set boundaries. The situation continues to generate conversation about sustainability and professionalism within Uganda’s music industry.
