Shock and Grief After Brutal Nursery School Attack
Kampala was left in shock on Thursday, April 2, 2026, after a horrifying stabbing attack at a nursery school in Ggaba, Makindye Division claimed the lives of four young children. The victims, all toddlers aged between two and three years, were killed in what authorities have described as a brutal and senseless act of violence inside what should have been a safe learning environment.
The incident occurred at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program, a daycare and kindergarten facility in the Ggaba area, sending waves of grief and outrage across Uganda as families, residents, and leaders struggled to come to terms with the tragedy.
Suspect Posed as Parent Before Launching Attack
According to reports, the attack happened at around 11:00 AM when a 39 year old man identified as Christopher Okello Onyum gained access to the school by posing as a parent seeking admission for a child.
He had reportedly visited the school days earlier to inquire about enrollment and was asked to return on Thursday. On the day of the incident, he allegedly completed admission procedures before suddenly attacking children inside the school using a sharp object believed to be a knife or machete.
At the time of the attack, about 14 children were present at the facility. The suspect reportedly targeted the toddlers in the compound or classroom area, stabbing several of them in a sudden and violent assault.
Four Young Lives Lost
Four children died on the spot following the attack. Reports identified the victims as Eteku Gideon, Kaise Alungat, Ignatius Sserwange, and Ryan Odeke.
The victims included three boys and one girl, all between two and three years old. The remaining children were rescued and later reunited with their families, though many were left traumatized by the incident.
The loss of such young lives has deeply affected the community, with parents and residents describing the attack as heartbreaking and unimaginable.
Suspect Arrested After Attempted Mob Justice
Following the attack, teachers and staff raised an alarm, prompting the suspect to attempt to flee the scene. Residents in the Ggaba neighborhood quickly mobilized and tried to lynch him in anger over the killings.
A security guard from a nearby church reportedly intervened and apprehended the suspect before police officers arrived. Uganda Police Force personnel rescued him from the mob and took him into custody at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that the suspect remains in detention as investigations continue.

Police Launch Investigations Into Motive
Police have described the incident as a tragic and brutal killing of juveniles, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack.
As of April 3, 2026, authorities had not established a clear reason for the killings. Investigators are examining the suspect’s background, place of residence, and any possible connection to the school or victims.
Officials have not confirmed whether the attack was linked to mental health issues, personal grievances, or any other criminal motive, leaving many questions unanswered.
Community Mourning and Calls for School Safety
Scenes from the area showed heavy police presence, cordoned off school premises, and grieving families gathered outside the nursery school. Children’s belongings, including toys and footwear, were seen scattered at the scene, highlighting the scale of the tragedy.
The incident has sparked nationwide discussions about security at early childhood centers and the need for stronger safety measures in schools. Parents and community leaders are calling for stricter access control, better background checks for visitors, and improved emergency response systems to protect children.
Many Ugandans have expressed condolences to the affected families, emphasizing the need for unity and support during this difficult time.

A Nation in Mourning
The Ggaba nursery school attack stands as one of the most disturbing incidents involving children in recent years in Uganda. The tragedy has shaken the country and raised urgent questions about safety in learning environments.
As investigations continue, the nation mourns the innocent lives lost and hopes that justice will be served. The incident remains a painful reminder of the importance of protecting children and ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning, care, and growth.
