Uganda Marks International Women’s Day with National Celebrations at Kololo

Uganda joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day with vibrant national festivities held at the historic Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala. The event marked the country’s 42nd national commemoration of the global day dedicated to advancing gender equality and recognizing the achievements of women.

The ceremony was presided over by Jessica Alupo, Uganda’s Vice President, who attended as the chief guest. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of Uganda, was also present during parts of the event alongside government officials, security leaders, and representatives from civil society.

This year’s national celebrations were held under the theme: “Scaling Up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls in Uganda.” The theme emphasized the need for stronger systems and resources to ensure equal rights, protection, and opportunities for women across the country.

All-Female Security Parade Highlights Event

One of the most striking moments of the celebrations was a special all-female security parade, showcasing women serving across Uganda’s uniformed forces. Participants included members of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force, and the Uganda Prisons Service.

The parade was commanded by Lt. Col. Evelyn Asiimwe, symbolizing the growing presence of women in national security roles. Female officers marched in full ceremonial uniform, demonstrating discipline and professionalism while highlighting their contributions to protecting the nation.

The display drew applause from the audience and served as inspiration for young girls aspiring to careers in leadership and public service.

National Honors Awarded to Outstanding Citizens

A key highlight of the event was the awarding of national medals to 34 individuals in recognition of their outstanding service to Uganda.

Of the recipients, 30 were women, reflecting the country’s focus on acknowledging female leadership and contributions in various sectors including public service, community development, and security.

Among the honors presented were prestigious national awards such as:

  • The National Independence Diamond Jubilee Medal

  • The Meritorious Service Medal

  • The Honorary Medal

Several female officers from security agencies were among those recognized for their dedication and commitment to national service.

Celebrating Progress and Calling for Greater Investment

Speeches and cultural performances throughout the day emphasized Uganda’s efforts to expand opportunities for women since the late 1980s, particularly in leadership, education, and economic participation.

Leaders at the event highlighted the importance of continued investment in systems that protect women’s rights and improve access to justice for girls and women across the country.

Uganda has been commemorating International Women’s Day nationally since 1984, making it one of the longest-standing observances of the global celebration on the African continent.

The 2026 celebration at Kololo served not only as a recognition of achievements but also as a reminder that work remains to be done.

As Uganda reflects on progress made toward gender equality, leaders and advocates continue to call for stronger policies, resources, and partnerships to empower women and girls nationwide.

For many attendees, the message of the day was clear: investing in women accelerates national development and strengthens society as a whole.
