A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of several supporters of Red Devo FC in the early hours of March 21, 2026, following their team’s defeat in the Stanbic Uganda Cup. The heartbreaking incident occurred as fans were returning home after attending the Round of 16 match against Express FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
Red Devo FC had suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Express FC on March 20, 2026, in the 52nd edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup. Express FC dominated the match with goals from Henry Wamala in the 38th minute, Kenneth Kimera who scored twice in the 88th and 89th minutes, and Herbert Assimwe who sealed the victory in the 90th minute, sending Express FC into the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The fatal accident reportedly occurred at Kalule along the Bombo Road as Red Devo supporters were traveling back toward Amolatar District, where the club is based. Initial reports indicated that three supporters had died in the crash, but updated information from credible sports journalists and local radio stations later confirmed that the death toll had risen to eight, making the incident one of the most devastating tragedies involving football supporters in recent Ugandan football history.
Early social media reports created confusion about the victims, with some posts suggesting that a club CEO was among the deceased and incorrectly linking the victims to Express FC. However, more consistent and verified accounts confirm that the victims were supporters of Red Devo FC, the visiting team that had lost the match. There is currently no confirmed report that a club CEO was involved, and authorities are still working to establish the full details of the incident.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football community, turning what would have been a moment of celebration for Express FC into a period of mourning across the sport. Supporters, clubs, and football stakeholders have expressed grief and sympathy for the families of the victims and the Red Devo FC community, as the nation reflects on the dangers faced by fans who travel long distances to support their teams.
Road accidents continue to be a major concern in Uganda, especially for football supporters who often travel overnight on highways to attend matches in different parts of the country. The incident at Kalule highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures, better transport coordination for supporters, and increased awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, the football community awaits official statements from authorities and football governing bodies. In the meantime, condolences continue to pour in for the families, friends, and the entire Red Devo FC fraternity during this difficult time.
