Tragic Coincidence: Oulanyah’s Father Nathan Okori Dies on Fourth Anniversary of Former Speaker’s Death

Mzee Nathan Okori died on the same date his son Jacob Oulanyah passed away four years ago.

Uganda is mourning the death of Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, father of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, who passed away at the age of 97 at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor. His death occurred on the same date his son died four years ago, adding a poignant layer to an already emotional anniversary.

Family members confirmed that Mzee Okori had been hospitalized two days earlier after developing respiratory complications. Despite medical care, his condition deteriorated, leading to his death.

The timing of his passing has drawn widespread attention, as March 20 marks exactly four years since Jacob Oulanyah died in 2022 while undergoing treatment in Seattle, United States.

Mzee Okori had previously come into the national spotlight during his son’s burial in Omoro District, where he publicly questioned the official cause of death. He alleged that Oulanyah had been poisoned, claims that generated national debate but were never substantiated.

Tributes have poured in from leaders across the country, with Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among confirming the death and extending condolences to the bereaved family.

Justice Minister Norbert Mao, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and Omoro County MP Andrew Ojok Oulanyah also expressed sympathy, describing the loss as significant for both the family and the wider community.

Across social media, Ugandans reflected on the symbolic timing, noting the emotional weight of losing both father and son on the same date, four years apart.

Jacob Oulanyah served as Speaker of Parliament from 2021 until his death at the age of 56. His passing was announced by President Yoweri Museveni, who described him as a committed leader and a key figure in Uganda’s governance.

The Oulanyah family has remained prominent in Omoro County and national affairs, with his son Andrew Ojok continuing the political legacy.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced following consultations between the family and government officials. Leaders have pledged support to ensure a dignified send-off.

As the country reflects on this rare and somber coincidence, the passing of Mzee Okori marks a moment of collective mourning, rekindling memories of a leader whose legacy remains deeply felt across Uganda.
