Thousands Gather at Kololo for Muhoozi’s 52nd Birthday Charity Run

Kampala event blends fitness and fundraising to support children’s homes across Uganda

Hundreds of runners turned up early Sunday morning at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the 52nd birthday charity run of Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The event, widely known as the MK Birthday Run, has grown into one of the country’s most visible public fitness gatherings, drawing participants from across Kampala and beyond.

Organizers scheduled arrivals from 6:00 AM, with the run officially flagged off at 7:00 AM. By sunrise, the grounds had filled with participants wearing branded kits, stretching, and preparing for the different race categories. The run is expected to continue through midday, with activities extending beyond the race itself.

Run Focuses on Charity and Community Support

The event centers on raising funds for children’s homes and welfare initiatives across Uganda. Organizers have positioned it as both a celebration and a call to action, encouraging participants to contribute to improving the lives of vulnerable children.

Led by groups such as the Patriotic League of Uganda, the run reflects a broader push to combine public engagement with charitable giving. Contributions from kit sales and participation fees go toward supporting orphanages and related programs.

Participants described the run as more than a fitness activity, pointing to its role in bringing attention to social issues while encouraging collective responsibility.

Large Turnout Reflects Growing Popularity

Events of this kind have become a regular feature in Uganda’s public calendar, often attracting large crowds. Today’s turnout includes civilians, youth groups, members of the armed forces, and public figures, creating a mix that reflects the event’s wide appeal.

The presence of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as chief runner adds to the visibility of the occasion. His participation often draws supporters and adds a ceremonial aspect to the run.

The atmosphere at Kololo remained lively throughout the morning, with music, announcements, and coordinated warm-up sessions keeping energy levels high before and after the race.

Structured Routes and Organized Participation

Participants took part in different race categories, typically including shorter and longer distance options such as 5km and 10km. These routes allow both experienced runners and casual participants to take part.

Organizers had earlier distributed official running kits priced at UGX 20,000 through various outlets in Kampala. The kits serve both as entry passes and as a way to raise funds for the charity cause.

Security personnel and traffic officers were deployed around the venue and along key routes to manage movement and ensure safety during the event. Authorities had assured participants of coordinated planning to handle the expected crowds.

Part of a Broader Running Culture

The Muhoozi Birthday Run follows closely after the Kabaka Birthday Run, which took place earlier in April. That event, held at Lubiri, also drew large numbers and focused on public health awareness.

Such runs have become a common way to connect public figures with social causes, combining physical activity with fundraising and awareness campaigns. They provide a platform for engagement while addressing issues such as health, education, and child welfare.

Today’s event builds on that trend, reinforcing the role of community-driven initiatives in addressing social challenges.

A Day of Activity and Purpose

As the run continues, participants move through the course while others gather at the grounds for post-run activities. The event serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the importance of collective action in supporting vulnerable groups.

Organizers expect the impact of the run to extend beyond the day itself, with funds raised contributing directly to children’s welfare programs. For many participants, the event offers a chance to combine fitness with a shared sense of purpose.

By midday, attention will shift from the race to the results and the broader outcome of the initiative. The strong turnout suggests continued support for charity runs as a way to engage the public while addressing key social needs.
