Mukono, Uganda | October 18, 2025, Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, narrowly escaped a road accident on Saturday evening when a trailer reportedly swerved toward her convoy along the Mukono–Jinja highway.

According to Chris Obore, the Parliament’s Director of Communication and Public Affairs, the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. as the Speaker was returning to Kampala from Bugweri District, where she had been campaigning for President Yoweri Museveni in her role as NRM Second Vice Chairperson (Female).

“The Speaker’s vehicle was nearly hit by a trailer after some vehicles in her convoy had passed. Her driver quickly moved to the edge of the road, avoiding a collision,” Obore posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Trailer Driver, Co-Driver in Custody

In his statement, Obore added that police in Mukono detained the trailer driver, identified as Lubega Ivan, 32, and his co-driver Waiswa Amis, to assist with ongoing investigations.
The trailer, which was headed toward Jinja, reportedly swerved toward the Speaker’s vehicle after several convoy cars had passed.

No injuries were reported, and the Speaker’s vehicle sustained no damage.

Public Reaction and Safety Concerns

News of the close call quickly spread across Ugandan social media, with many expressing relief that the Speaker was unharmed. Others used the moment to highlight Uganda’s recurring road safety challenges, especially on highways prone to heavy truck traffic and overtaking accidents.

The Mukono–Jinja highway remains one of the country’s busiest and most dangerous roads, where frequent collisions have claimed many lives over the years.

Speaker Among is reported to be in good health and has since resumed her official duties in Kampala.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
