Uganda has taken another step in promoting sports tourism and regional culture with the official launch of the Mbarara City Marathon 2026 alongside the Explore Ankole tourism campaign. The event was unveiled on March 10, 2026, during a launch ceremony held at the Fairway Hotel Kampala in Kampala.
The launch was organized under the leadership of the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Uganda and brought together tourism ambassadors, influencers, athletes, and marathon enthusiasts to celebrate an initiative designed to combine sport, culture, and tourism promotion.
Marathon Set for March 28 in Mbarara
The Mbarara City Marathon 2026 will take place on March 28, 2026, in Mbarara, the largest urban center in the historic Ankole region of western Uganda.
Organizers say the marathon will feature several race categories to accommodate runners of all levels, including:
- Full Marathon (42.195 km)
- Half Marathon
- 10 km race
- 5 km family run
The race route is expected to highlight scenic landscapes, cultural landmarks, and the growing urban energy of Mbarara City while promoting healthy living and community participation.
Promoting Tourism Through Sport
Alongside the marathon launch, organizers also introduced the Explore Ankole campaign, which aims to spotlight the region’s cultural identity, tourism attractions, and natural beauty.
The campaign highlights the heritage of the Ankole region, including its globally recognized long-horned cattle, traditional culture, and scenic landscapes that attract both domestic and international visitors.
Speakers at the event emphasized that the marathon will serve as a platform to place Ankole on the global tourism map, drawing runners and visitors while boosting regional visibility and economic activity.
