Ugandan dancehall artist Beenie Gunter recently shared the inspiring backstory behind his collaboration with Jamaican superstar Dexta Daps on the track “Dreams Cya Die” (also styled as “Dreams Can’t Die”), a highlight from his fresh 13-track album New School Tape.
In an interview, Beenie explained that the feature came about through genuine mutual respect and the unexpected power of music.
Dexta Daps first encountered Beenie’s work during a TV appearance in Uganda, where the station played his tracks. Impressed, Dexta reportedly asked, “Who’s the artist? I’d like to meet him.”The connection was made possible thanks to Mr. Alibhai from Talent Africa, who facilitated a meeting and encouraged Beenie to link up with Dexta at the Four Points by Sheraton in Kampala for a recording session.
Beenie Gunter emphasized that the collaboration wasn’t forced or overly pursued by either side. Rather, it felt like divine timing and the unifying force of music at work. “It’s just the music, it’s God’s blessings,” he said. “Imagine someone coming here for an interview and then you play an artist and they say they would love to meet them.
When we met, it was basically positive energy as one family, the dancehall family.”He added that he had never specifically planned to work with Dexta Daps, nor did he expect to join Dexta’s show in Uganda last year.
Yet their instant chemistry transformed a serendipitous moment into a powerful cross-border track now featured on New School Tape, showcasing the organic bonds within the dancehall community.
