The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has announced the resumption of periodic maintenance works along the Kampala Northern Bypass, Phase One, with construction set to begin on February 13, 2026, and expected to last for at least two months.
In a public notice issued by the ministry, road users were informed that the works will affect the section between Bwaise Interchange and Namungoona Interchange, where traffic will be temporarily diverted due to the planned maintenance activities.
According to the statement, the works will be undertaken by M/S Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of the Ministry of Works and Transport. The scope of work includes the removal of the existing asphalt, base preparation, priming, and the laying of a new asphalt overlay, aimed at improving the durability and safety of the bypass.
To allow for safe and efficient execution, the affected section of the carriageway will be fully closed, with traffic diverted to the opposite side of the road. Motorists have been urged to remain patient, observe all posted traffic signs, and follow instructions issued by traffic personnel deployed along the route.
While traffic will continue to flow on the opposite carriageway during the works, the ministry has advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance and, where possible, use alternative routes off the Northern Bypass to minimise delays and congestion.
The Ministry acknowledged the inconvenience the works may cause but emphasised that the maintenance is necessary to enhance road safety and improve the overall driving experience for road users in and around Kampala.
“We regret any disruption caused and appreciate the cooperation of road users as we undertake these essential works to improve road infrastructure,” the notice, signed by Bageya Waiswa, Permanent Secretary, reads.
